As one of the leading day spas and med spas in central Arkansas, we have countless clients come to us seeking advice to address their skincare problems. While many of these issues are a result of genetics and the natural aging process, there are also a large number influenced by controllable factors. Here are a few of the most common mistakes we see, and how to avoid them.
Using tanning beds.
Tanning beds not only damage skin from a cosmetic standpoint by creating wrinkles and causing hyperpigmentation, but they are also linked to skin cancer. We understand the desire for that golden glow, but with all of the outstanding tanning products available today, there’s no need to subject your skin to dangerous tanning beds to achieve it. We recommend , Tan Towel and St. Tropez for a healthy, sun-kissed look year round. You can find both products at Rejuvenation Clinic.
Not using sunscreen.
We’ve covered the dangers of artificial sunrays, but the real ones, while more natural, can also wreak havoc on your skin condition – and cause cancer. Using a sunscreen every day protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, decreasing your risk of cancer and preventing sun damage and wrinkles. Skin Medica’s Total Defense and Repair, which we carry at the spa, is one of our favorites.
Sleeping with makeup on.
Leaving pore-clogging makeup on your delicate face all night can wreck your skin, causing acne that could take months to clear up. Subsequently, your acne could also result in scarring, which often takes much stronger products and more time to remedy. To us, this level of damage is simply not worth the extra 10-15 minutes of sleep. Your skin often uses each night’s sleep to recover and repair itself, so take advantage of that time by not only removing pore-clogging products, but by also giving it an extra dose of antioxidants and vitamins to supercharge the process by using a serum, moisturizer, oil, mask and/or cream.
Assuming you should use a skincare product or treatment because it worked for someone else.
When we see a family member or friend experiencing incredible results from a new product or treatment, we often want to run out and do the exact same thing for ourselves. The problem is that everyone’s skin is unique and has different needs. What works for one person may not be as effective for another person. Before starting a new regimen or getting a new treatment, consult a skincare expert who can evaluate your skin condition and recommend the best course of action for you.
Letting yourself become dehydrated.
Being hydrated is key to having gorgeous, glowing skin and getting the most out of the products you use and the treatments you have done. Make a point to drink water throughout the day, and avoid diuretics such as alcohol and caffeine. If you do enjoy a morning cup of coffee or occasional glass of vino, make sure to up your water intake to counteract the negative effects.
Not sleeping enough.
As we’ve already discussed, your skin uses your nightly sleep to repair and rejuvenate itself. If you cut this process short, your skin will show it. This is one reason why you begin to notice dark circles under your eyes and a duller, more haggard appearance when you sleep less.
We hope we’ve helped you avoid some of the skin pitfalls we commonly see, but if you’ve already made a habit of doing a couple of these, don’t worry! There are a wide variety of treatments and products available to refresh and rejuvenate dull, damaged skin. If you’d like some guidance in getting a game plan to make or keep your skin fresh, healthy and glowing, schedule a consultation at Rejuvenation Clinic to talk to one of our skincare experts.
